Finding the Right Backpack Fit

Contents:

Taking Measurements

  • It is a good idea to have a friend help you take these measurements comfortably and accurately.
  • Place a piece of masking tape on your 7th vertebra, the bony protrusion at the base of your neck between your shoulders.
  • Now find the point at the small of your back that is exactly level with the top, or shelf, of your hipbones. Slide your hands (fingers forward, thumbs behind you) down your sides until they rest directly on top of your hips. Your thumbs will point toward your spine. Have a friend ensure that your thumbs are on the same horizontal plane across your spine.
  • Place another piece of tape on the spine at the point where the imaginary horizontal plane would cross.
  • Using a soft measuring tape, place one end on the 7th vertebra (1) and follow the contour of your spine to the tape mark on your lower back (3).
  • Write down the measurement in inches (in the United States) or centimeters.

Fit Tips

  • Hip belts: Women with straight or narrow hips will have little trouble with standard hip belts. Individuals (men or women) with more curve to their hips will need a woman's style waist belt.
  • Note that hip belts should cup your hips (1) and be sized so when cinched tightly, there is still a bit of webbing left and the pads do not touch.
  • Shoulder straps: They should anchor to the backpack just below the 7th vertebra and near the crest of your shoulders. They should wrap comfortably, but securely, around the shoulders and the strap padding should end no closer than 5 inches (12.5cm) below your armpit.
  • Sternum straps: These are meant to keep your shoulder straps from sliding off your shoulders under a load (2). They are not meant to support weight and should never be pulled so tightly that they restrict breathing.
  • Load-Lifters: These should form a 45-degree angle from the frame or top of the pack to a point at or above your clavicle.

Helmet Sizing and Fit

You wear a helmet to protect your head from injury, but you won't get the maximum protection unless it is properly sized with a snug, aligned fit. The information below is designed to guide you in achieving a safe, secure helmet fit.

Fit Tips

Look at the bike helmet example to the right. A helmet fits properly when:

  • It sits squarely on the head with the front of the helmet low on the brow to protect the forehead
  • The padding exerts firm, uniform pressure all around the head so that the skin on the forehead moves as the helmet is rotated from left to right and from front to back

If the harness isn't correctly adjusted, it's possible for the helmet to be knocked off or out of place. The harness is correctly adjusted when:

  • The helmet sits squarely on the head with the front low on the brow to protect the forehead
  • The front and rear straps form a "Y" just below and forward of the ears
  • There is no slack when the chin-strap is fastened

General Tips:

  • Do not wear a helmet tipped back on the head. Even if you can form the "Y" around the ears and eliminate slack, helmets worn on the back of the head are more likely to pop off and do not protect the forehead
  • Buckle the chin strap securely at the throat. Connect the buckle according to the instructions provided with your helmet, and pull on the strap until it is snug against your throat. This ensures that your helmet will not come off at high-impact

Fit Tips

  • A size 18-24M (XL) in Infants is also a size 2T in Toddlers. The difference is that an Infant size garment will likely snap at the crotch.
  • A size 4T and a size 4 are usually close in dimensions. The difference is the selection of styles in each.
  • Generally, boys grow faster in their arms and legs before they start to gain weight (or "fill-out"). For this reason, measure your child's inseam and check the garment's measurement before selecting your child's size.
  • After a child outgrows a size 16 in Girl's or 18 / 20 in Boy's, the pre-teen or teen will move to Women's or Men's apparel
  • Use the information and chart below to help determine the proper snowshoe size:
    • Snowshoes usually come in three sizes: 8"x25", 9"x30" and 10"x36"
    • Women's-specific models are also on the market, and many come with smaller (8"x21") contoured frames as well as bindings that accommodate women's generally smaller-sized footwear
    • Youth models usually come in 6"x15" and 7"x18" sizes
